LED lighting provides many benefits, especially for K-12 schools. Schools that decide to upgrade to LEDs not only see increased academic performance in their students, but also decreased energy bills. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, switching to LEDs can reduce your energy consumption by 75 to 80 percent. Recently, we partnered with Byers High School (BHS) in Byers, CO, on an LED upgrade. In this post, we present their case and explain the benefits schools receive from switching to LED lighting.
Switching to LED lighting
Before their upgrade, BHS consumed nearly 8,372 hours and spent over $48,400 on lighting per year. In working with the school’s team, NetZero recommended installing flat panels, LED retrofit strips, and LED highbays inside the school. Additionally, we suggested adding shoeboxes and wallpacks outdoors and in the parking lot.
The updated equipment helped them save 51%, with 57 fewer watts consumed by each fixture. Annually, they now save 245,885 kilowatt hours and $369,000! As a result of this LED upgrade, the students attending this school now benefit from a better, brighter learning environment. Moreover, the district is saving money each month through the incredible reduction in energy consumption. In fact, over the next 10 years, more than $369,137 dollars in cumulative savings will be delivered as a direct result of this project. Think about all the amazing things the school can now do with that money!
Additional benefits of LED lighting for schools
Not only can K-12 schools benefit financially from switching over to LED lighting. There are many other benefits as well:
- Improved student concentration and academic performance
- Enhanced lighting controls
- Lowered risk of exposure to harmful PCBs and mercury
- Improved student and faculty moods and health
- Reduced maintenance hassles
